17 May 2021

We’re excited to announce our new partnership with Stonewall Cymru starts today (17 May), the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, which celebrates diversity and raises awareness of the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.

Stonewall is the largest LGBTQ+ rights charity in Europe. It campaigns for the equality of lesbian, gay, bi and trans across Britain. Its mission is to make sure every single LGBTQ+ person is accepted without exception.

Ffion Grundy, Head of Programmes, at Stonewall Cymru commented: “We’re thrilled Transport for Wales has joined the Diversity Champions programme in Wales. Through the programme, Transport for Wales will receive tailored support and a framework to help create a more inclusive workplace where LGBTQ+ staff can thrive.  We hope that this will also have a positive impact on their customers across Wales too.”

Emma Eccles, our Head of HR Transformation, said: “I’m delighted we’re now working in partnership with Stonewall. We believe all our employees should be able to bring their whole self to work and this partnership will assist us in ensuring we have the right policies and practices in place.

"This, along with the work we’re doing with Chwarae Teg’s Fairplay Employer programme, will drive froward our ambition to be one of Wales’ most inclusive employers.”

Partnering with industry experts, who can share their knowledge and best practice with us, will help us to meet our Equality Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Objectives. It will support us in ensuring our workplace is inclusive and both our LGBTQ+ colleagues and customers feel valued for who they are. It’ll also allow us to lead initiatives to raise awareness, promote positive attitudes and improve understanding of LGBTQ+ issues in our workforce and champion the rights of our LGBTQ+ colleagues.

Commenting on the partnership with Stonewall Cymru, our Head of Brand and member of our ED&I Group, Neil James said: “Partnering with Stonewall is one of a number of important ways TfW can signal its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion both internally and externally. We’re building a diverse team that mirrors the communities we serve”

We believe diversity makes us stronger and helps us to understand our customers better, make better decisions and be more innovative. We’re building a diverse team that mirrors the communities we serve. We’ll work with Stonewall to gain status on the UK Workplace Equality Index, the definitive benchmarking tool for employers to measure their progress on lesbian, gay, bi and trans inclusion in the workplace.

Our Stakeholder Manager and member of our ED&I Group, Arron Bevan-John, said: “Signing this partnership agreement with Stonewall Cymru is ground-breaking and shows our commitment to placing equality, diversity and inclusion at the top of the agenda. This is more than just a tick-box exercise for us, we’re working to educate our colleagues and to be a beacon for change to our customers and partners.”
