Brandon Johnston is a 21-year-old media student at Bournemouth University. A local resident, he has clocked over 250 rides since the launch of the e-scooter trial, using them on an almost daily basis to get to lectures, classes, work or sometimes just for leisure.

He said: “I had originally seen people riding them around along the beachfront and I thought they looked like they’d be fun to use.”

Speed and convenience were the main factors for him when deciding to give Beryl’s scheme a try.

“I either walked or skated mostly beforehand, but the Beryl bikes and scooters are more usable in all types of weather as well as helping to make the journey faster.”

Although he was already an advocate of sustainable travel, having previously relied on walking or skating, Brandon is well aware of the environmental impact of micromobility schemes.

“I think they are a great alternative to cars or buses when it comes to short distance journeys. E-Scooters contribute much less air pollution than cars and bike share schemes are a great way to promote health and fitness whilst also being useful to the daily commute.”

Brandon is also complimentary of the customer service, explaining that the user interface was very accessible and easy to use. However, he does have suggestions on how the scheme could be improved and would like to see it expanded further afield, opening it up to a wider pool of users.

“I think making them more accessible to a wider region in the area would be helpful as many of the parking bays are closer to town, which can make it harder to find them around the Winton or Charminster areas.”
