Teachers Join Striking Autoworkers on More Than 40 Picket Lines in National Day of Action; AFT President Walking the Line with UAW Members in Cincinnati

West Chester, Ohio — On Thursday, October 5, Randi Weingarten, the national president of the largest AFL-CIO affiliate – the 1.7 million member American Federation of Teachers (AFT) – is heading to the picket line to stand with striking UAW workers at GM’s Cincinnati Parts Distribution Center as part of a national day of action.

AFT members will join the picket line at over 40 other sites across the country in a nationwide solidarity action in support of the UAW’s Stand Up Strike against the Big Three. Click here for a full list and map of the union’s 43 active picket lines in 21 states.

Recent polling finds that support for the UAW has been growing since the strike against the Big Three began on Sept. 15.

  • A Gallup poll conducted in August showed that 75 percent of the public sided with union members against the companies.
  • A new poll conducted in late September by Navigator Research found that 78 percent of Americans back the UAW.

“The autoworkers’ brains and brawn have generated record profits for the Big Three, and it’s well past time for them to share in the wealth they created,” Weingarten said.

Ford, General Motors and Stellantis made a quarter-trillion dollars in North American profits over the last decade. They made $21 billion in total profits in just the first six months of this year. Over the last four years, average CEO pay at the Big Three jumped 40 percent, but UAW members got raises of only 6 percent.

The automakers have spent billions on stock buybacks and lavish executive compensation but are still refusing to reward UAW members for the record profits they have earned.
