Blwyddyn Newydd, Teithio Newydd

16 Jan 2023

The start of the new year is the perfect chance to embrace new habits, especially for our health and well-being.

We’ve put together some simple steps to add to your daily routine to start the new year on a healthier, greener step.

Go for a walk each day

Living in one of the most scenic places in the world, Wales has plenty to offer in terms of walks. From gentle canal strolls to the more adventurous mountain hikes, beachside rambles or historic town trails there’s something for all interests and all fitness levels. Take a look at Ramblers Wales for great local walks, or visit Wales Coastal Path to discover a variety of trails connected by rail.

An easy way to increase your steps is by choosing to walk for shorter journeys. Heading to the shops, to dinner or to visit family and friends? Instead of driving, don your walking shoes, grab a brolly and get some fresh air with a walk to your destination.

Cycle to the station

Pedal to a healthier you by cycling to your closest station. Gentle exercise can help reduce stress levels and blood pressure, it’s also a great way to get your endorphins going so you can start your day with a clear mind and positive attitude.

Many of our stations offer secure bicycle storage. If you’re commuting to Newport or Cardiff for your train, the Newport Cycle Hub and the Bike Lock in Cardiff are two fantastic social enterprises offering bicycle storage facilities allowing you to leave your bike safely stored for your return. With showers, lockers and even a café make sure to stop by and check them out next time you’re in the city. Need to rent a bike? Find out about Ovo bikes here.

A few of our services also offer on-board bicycle spaces. These work on a first-come-first-served basis, with some services allowing you to reserve a space in advance when you purchase your ticket. You can find out more about taking bikes on trains here.

Catch the train to work

Across the UK,  people spent on average 80 hours stuck in traffic last year!* Take back your mornings by catching the train into work. You don’t have to worry about traffic jams or the cost of parking. With Wi-Fi and charging points available on most of our services, you can get a head start on your work day, catch up on your favourite show or podcast, dig into a good book or simply enjoy the scenery of Wales before you start your day.

To help you make the change, we’re offering 12 tickets for the price of 6! Check out our latest deal on Multiflex train fares.

So put down those keys and leave the car at home this January to embrace the new year and a new you.
